Program Growth
Thanks to lots of hard work from dedicated staff members and our wonderful foster families, the foster program has grown tremendously over the years. This has led to KHS being able to save more animals and extend the reach of our shelter's lifesaving work to rural communities throughout Kentucky and the surrounding area.
2020 saw a large bump in animals going to foster due to COVID and many people being home and able to foster.
See below for some info on just how much our program has grown. Thank you so much for being a part of this growth!
In the month of September, we sent 279 animals to foster care. We truly cannot do this without you!
You all know that you are helping the specific animals you take into your home, but do you ever wonder how big of a difference our foster team makes as a whole? Well wonder no more! We have the data and we want to share it with you. The numbers below represent animals that, if not for people like you opening your homes, may not have had positive outcomes in a shelter. These are animals who are too scared, too young or sick, or for many other reasons are not good candidates for adoption when they come into the shelter. Sending them to foster gives them a chance they otherwise would not have. We are so thankful for our foster families. Shelters that do not have a support network like this are not able to save lives the same way we can 💗
Cats & Kittens
Between January and September 2022, we have sent 1,279 cats & kittens to foster homes.
This is a HUGE number of animals saved and I hope knowing you've helped save this many lives makes all those poopy nights and runny noses worth it!
Dogs & Puppies
Between January and September 2022, we have sent 766 canines to foster homes.
That is 160 more than last year during the same time period and is phenomenal increase. Thank you dog fosters!
Animals adopted straight from foster homes typically get to spend the least amount of time in the shelter.
In September 2022, 48 animals were adopted directly from a foster home. We have had a total of 323 animals adopted from foster homes this year. You all are doing an amazing job finding your babies homes!
