Adoption Ambassadors
The Adoption Ambassador program allows animals that do not show well for adoption at the shelter to remain in a foster home while up for adoption. Many of these animals are very stressed out by the hustle and bustle of the adoption floor, but settle in wonderfully once in a home.
What to expect with an Adoption Ambassador
KHS staff reads and screens all applicants for the animal. Once an application is approved, we will forward it to you to reach out to the adopter and set up a meeting. Meetings can either be held at one of our adoption centers, in your home (often best choice if you are fostering a cat), at a park, pet supply store, or any other public place where your foster animal is likely to be comfortable. KHS staff will be responsible to for processing the adoption and collecting adoption fees.
Most Adoption Ambassador animals will be with you for at least 2 weeks. Average length of stay can vary tremendously depending on the animals age and personality, but typically is less than 2 months.
What is expected of you as a foster
As a foster with an animal who is actively up for adoption, we need you to have excellent communication with us. We need to be made aware of any changes in your fosters behavior as soon as they occur. Being able to take pictures/video of your foster and providing us with detailed info on their personality is very important to help them find the right home and promote them to the public.
Once we forward you an approve application, we need you to reach out quickly to the adopter and set up meetings within the next 2 or so days. It is very important that you keep us updated on the conversations you have with adopters (if you've spoken with them, when you are meeting, etc).
There are 2 options for a meeting. You and the adopter can decide what works best for both of you.
Meet at a location of your choice.
Park, pet supply store, your home (this is the best option for cats, or fearful animals), etc. If it's a match, they won't be able to take him home right away. We will send the adopter info on how to complete a virtual adoption. Once that is complete, you can arrange to meet again so they can pick up.
Meet at one of our adoption centers.
If it's a match, our adoptions counselors will be able to complete the adoption right away. If you would like to schedule a meeting at the adoption center, let us know and we will send you the link to do so. You must have an adoption appointment scheduled on the adoptions calendar prior to meeting at East Campus or Main Campus.
